The Host

So today at the pool I finished reading Stephenie Meyer's book "The Host." (I LOVE reading at the pool). I have read her previous three novels, the "vampire" books as I call them and liked them okay. I wasn't head over heels in love with them like a lot of people were but I also understand that I am 35 and those books were written for young adults, or junior high kids. I did enjoy them in the sense that they were clean, yet still contained a lot of adventure and romance. Christina, who used to teach that age group, always struggled with reading suggestions for her girls and thank goodness there are authors out there willing to go against the norm and write books that don't contain everything teenagers DON'T need to be reading about. So anyway, I picked "The Host" up at Hastings and I had heard it was Meyer's first book aimed toward an adult audience. I won't write about the plot, but I can say it was enjoyable and it was an interesting subject. It took me about 50 pages to get into it (I thought the beginning was a bit confusing -- you have to know the premise -- that aliens, in the form of worms, are being injected into humans and taking over earth) -- Anyway, I finished it, and like most books I finish I am sad until I am fully involved in my next book. I have a list of about 10 books I want to read but they are all in hardback and I don't want to pay those prices. I started reading, "The Chosen" -- a friend suggested it, so we'll see how it goes. It's another one of those books that has a set of cliffnotes and I always get nervous reading those. I read enough of those books in AP English in high school.....

Brooke it is so funny that you are posting about this book, because one of my good friends just emailed me last week and asked if I had read any of Stephanie Meyers books. I had not and to be honest, I had never heard of her, but promised my friend that I would read them. I'm excited to hear your review. My friend also told me that they have been filming a movie that they are making for her first book (I believe it was that one) where she lives. Pretty cool! When I was in A.P. English, my professor gave us all a list of books (over 100) that all college aimes students should read. I keep promising myself that I will read them. I think I can check off about 30--got a long way to go!LOL

Brooke, we truly get most of our books at the library! I hope you have a good one nearby. I too love to read but, now that I'm back in school, find little time to read for enjoyment. I think I'll see if I can check out "The Host." Thanks for suggesting it. The best books I've read have been those recommended by friends!

Andrea and Susan -- Stephenie Meyer is LDS and she's not one of those "cheesy" LDS writers -- no mention of religioni in the books and they've all been best sellers. Just good, clean writing. Let me know if you guys read it and what you think!

Brooke, I love The Chosen, and so will you. You will learn all about Hasidic Jews. I just started The Underneath (probably for ages 10-100). It is brand new and the author has it all right--plot, sense of place, magical writing. I have also been reading some Scandinavian mysteries. Wow! They are really different from American mysteries. I can give you the titles if you want. Sometime I will give you my opinion of the Meyer's books. Did you like the new one better than the vampire books?

I did like "The Host" better than the vampire books. Like I said, I wasn't head over heels in love with the vampire books -- I thought they dragged at times and even though it is "fantasy" her ideas were a little strange concerning the vampires and werewolves. And even though they were written for young adults, I found them a bit confusing at times. Having said that, I did think they were a bit enjoyable and it gave me something to read. What I want to read is the new Ladies Detective Agency book -- can't wait. Christina mentioned you are reading the scandanavian mysteries. When you get a chance, send me a few of the titles....

This book sounds very strange. You are much more patient than me. I would've given up after 20 pages. My mom isn't crazy about the vampire books either. She says they're not that well written. We all agree that we'll suggest anything that gets kids to read, right?
p.s. My mom just finished a book called The Underneath. She said it's one of the best she's read. My aunt loved it too.

You thought the vampire books "were okay"?!?!?! Just okay?! Holy cow, I just read the 2nd and 3rd this week and finished last night and I'm obsessed. Seriously. Maybe that's because I'm a 34 year old that acts like a teenager? Or because I secretly want Brad to be a 17 year old vampire? I can't believe you didn't just love them! I'm counting the days until the last one comes out.

Right now though, I'm having that sad-cause-I-need-to-start-another-book feeling. I thought I'd take a little break though cause Brad was starting to feel ignored. LOL

I need to read those books. Everyone I have talked to liked them. You're the first I have heard from that has read the most recent book. Hmmmm, I think that I'll have to catch up this summer.
I hope you don't mind me peeking in and adding you to my links.
