Finding inspiration on page 217

While on vacation I finished reading "The Chosen," by Chaim Potok -- it was a book for our church book club group, which I must admit I've never been to, but every once in a while will read the book selection. I loved this book. In a nutshell it's the story of the friendship of two Jewish boys who though both Jewish are raised differently. I won't go into details (I am so not good at writing book reports) but I highly, highly recommend this book to everyone. It's an easy read, but a great read. There are places when you want a highlighter so you can remember that line -- My favorite page was page 217 -- Here's a snippet of it...(a father is talking to his son about how he has grown up during the past year) -- "Human beings do not live forever...We live less than the time it takes to blink an eye, if we measure our lives against eternity. So it may be asked what value is there to a human life. There is so much pain in the world. What does it mean to suffer so much if our lives are nothing more than the blink of an eye?....a blink of an eye in itself is nothing. But the eye that blinks, that is something. A span of life is nothing. But the man who lives that span, he is something. He can fill that tiny span with meaning, so its quality is immeasurable though its quantity may be insignificant. A man must fill his life with meaning, meaning is not automatically given to life. It is hard work to fill one's life with meaning. A life filled with meaning is worthy of rest...." Isn't that worthy of a highlighter?

Yes, it is worth a highlighter. When I'm reading, I often find quotes that I love and I will mark them thinking, "oh that will be good for a talk one day, but then my memory is so bad when that talk comes around, I often can barely remember the quote let alone the book it came from.
I so appreciate your "book reports". It is making me want to pick up books again. I took the girls to the library the other day and they both left with armfuls and what did I leave with? Nothing...I'm gonna check this book out. It sounds interesting.

What a great quote! Totally worthy of a highlighter. Now I want to check the book out; it really sounds like a good read.
